What do women want? They want something that they can do two things as once, they want something where they can save time, they want something like a flip flop that works their legs out whilst they walk.
So it was difficult to find anybody who could really make the idea into a reality, and after quite alot of searching we found LSBU in the centre for human performance there - Dr Davis is a senior lecturer and Darren is a PHD student. We had one initial meeting where Dr Dave came in and he was so incredibly passionate and he just started rambling off just how he would make it happen, he had a very clear vision of how to make something that would train the bottom of the foot to do all the work it would do naturally as if you were walking barefoot.
The main premise of the actual fitflop is to induce a bit of instability that we’ve talked about, so when you’re walking, you hit the ground, as normally as possible it them moves you so you progress over these phase quite quickly and then you move into a softer area and as you are moving into this softer area, coming with softness is obviously instability so your muscles have to suddenly activate to hold your posture, hold your feet, hold your shape. So as you actually then averting, so your foot is starting to roll over slightly, the fitflop is doing this over more time and so the body is being stimulated a little bit more, it’s having to work a little bit more over this period of time and then when it comes of this soft area it then tapers back over again to a firm area, so you can then progress. So, if you like it is a reward, its done its soft work, you’ve done your hard work and now you’ve hit a nice area you can push off and move to your next step.

Now, its been called the Fitflop, we’ve been trying them out already - rubber sandals that claims, here we go, to tone up your thighs, burn calories, get rid of cellulite and give you longer leaner limbs. So, of course they are flying off the shelves.
We’ve got an order for 30,000 pieces which was pretty exciting and they pretty much sold out within a week. Fitflops then shipped 2,000 over by air to the U.K and they were gone in hours.

‘And why you buying blue Fitflops?’ Because I already have the Black Fitflops, they are kinda like my MBTs, but my Fitflops are easier to wear.
‘And do you notice when you take them off at the end of the day, you’ve gone barefoot that you want to put the back on?’ Yeah, actually, really you do. I’ve worn them in the shower when we were in a hotel in Italy actually, because of that. I just feel bouncier in them and I feel they are a good height so that you feel they are flattering on your legs. They’re very comfortable.

I think the Fitflop is a very marketable product, because the price point is accessible to many people. The Fitflops are good looking, they’re stylish and you can wear them with jeans, you can wear them with sports clothes, you can wear them even with a skirt. There are alot of shoes out there that are high tech and promise to do alot from a biomechanical standpoint, but alot of them are out of the budget of your average person.
